There is no doubt that we are, as a country and as a profession, at a crossroads, and no clear singposts which way to turn. At least one road, we know, leads to darkness, the other might lead to a new era of thinking about our built environment and national infrastructure, and a possible new golden age of building beyond. At the same time, there is, it seems, an unprecedent level of bullshit floating around in the air: abstract theory where we should have comprehensible discourse, celebrity worship when we should focus on the problems that affect everybody, not just the social elite and their wannabe admirers. If there is an objective at archlog, it is to try and call out these distractions and to keep everybody focused on the real work, hard work, at hand remaking and rebuilding our country after at least a decade, and possibly more, of neglect and wishful thinking. And, oh yes, to promote some books along the way.
